JetCat PRO Turbines

The JetCat PRO turbines offer maximum integration and installation. All system equipment required for turbine operation is fully integrated under the turbine hood. Apart from the supply battery, the fuel tank and the control signals, no further external subsystems are required! The control signals are output on a data cable terminated with a 15-pin SUB-D connector. Power is optionally supplied via the power cable with XT60 plug for direct battery connection.

Standard Version

The standard P300-PRO Engines have a "normal" starter motor, without generator (to save costs, e.g. for hobby applications). With our "JetCat-PRO" interface, the Engines can easily be used for RC model applications. The PRO interface has already integrated the full functionality of our telemetry adapter!

Generator Version PRO GL

These versions consist of a brushless and non-contact starter/generator system. The generator is "soft coupled", i.e. it rotates at a lower speed than the turbine shaft itself (patent pending). A built-in and integrated DC / DC converter with additional charge control enables buffering / recharging of the turbine battery. The charging system is able to supply charging energy to the Engine battery at idling speed. The electrical power of this charging system is approx. 85W. The "soft" coupling of the generator limits the power output.

The generator is "hard" coupled to the turbine shaft (but there is no mechanical contact), i.e. it rotates at the same speed as the turbine. This configuration allows a much higher power output of the generator (900W!). This version is also supplied with an unregulated 3-phase alternating current supply. Typically, the measured no-load DC voltage is approximately 12V / 7.5A (33,000 1 / min) and 35V / 22A (100,000 1 / min) when charged with a 1.5 Ohm resistor behind a rectifier network (6x High Power Schottky diodes).

Kerosene Launch System Set

JetCat PRO Turbines

The JetCat PRO turbines offer maximum integration and installation. All system equipment required for turbine operation is fully integrated under the turbine hood. Apart from the supply battery, the fuel tank and the control signals, no further external subsystems are required!

JetCat P250PRO-S

The new P250-PRO-S is particularly suitable for large models in the 25 kg class, 3D sports jets and industrial applications. The completely new kerosene start system impresses with start times of under 20 seconds. Sensational thrust-to-weight ratio with a system weight of all components (turbine, Pro-Interface, mounting clamps) below 2300g. The installation effort is reduced to a minimum because the ECU, pump, valves and filter are completely integrated in the turbine. The connection to the RC system is made via our PRO interface, which provides additional interfaces such as: Telemetry (Jeti, Graupner Hott, Multiplex, Futaba), GSU ​​connection, Airspeed sensor, CAN bus interface, RS232 interface, Twin -Engine cross-check and online software updates.

JetCat-PRO turbine functions

  • Innovative kerosene starting system: no preheating, no glow plug wear out, minimal power consumption for the ignition system (only a few mA).
  • The turbine ignites within 1.5 seconds after the start command and is ready to idle after typically 15 seconds (max. 20 seconds).
  • Capable in Air Restart (manual or automatic)
  • High power brushless starter
  • Brushless fuel pump
  • Fully automatic fuel suction function. The system automatically detects as soon as fuel is applied to the pump / has been sucked in. There is no need to manually fill the fuel lines.
  • Barometric altitude / pressure sensor, for automatic turbine adjustment to operating altitude.

JetCat P220-PRO Engines:

Introduction

The JetCat-P220-PRO type turbo-jet engine is designed as a propulsion unit for RC-aircraft and/or drones.
The engine is lubricated by fuel with oil admixture.
The engine is equipped with a BLDC starter), 1x BLDC fuel pump, 2x fuel solenoids and electronic control system
(FADEC type).
The engine may be modified based on customer specific requirements and to meet different operating / installation
conditions. The engine is available with two different nozzles (long/short).


Functional description
The JetCat P220-PRO is a single-shaft engine comprising a single-stage radial compressor, annular combustion
chamber, single stage axial turbine and fixed exhaust nozzle. At the compressor intake, there is a brushless starter
system mounted. Intake air is compressed in the radial compressor stage, proceeds through the radial and axial
diffuser into the combustion chamber where it is mixed with vaporized fuel. Combustion gases generated by fuel
burning in the combustion chamber expand through the single state axial turbine and the exhaust nozzle to the
atmosphere. The gas exiting the exhaust cone produces the required thrust. The rotor of the engine is mounted on 2
ball bearings lubricated by a fuel/oil mix.


Control options / electrical interface
The JetCat-PRO engine series provides the highest level of integration and maximum ease of installation.
All peripheral systems necessary for the engines operation are fully integrated below the engines front cowling.

JetCat P220-PRO engine features/functions
Integrated Engine sided Components:

  • ECU (electronic control unit), fully programmable via detachable Ground Support Unit (GSU)
  • Brushless starter and seal free brushless fuel pump
  • Fuel & Kerosene-start solenoids
  • Post Fuel filter downstream of the pump (last barrier filter)
  • Barometric altitude / pressure sensor allowing for automatic engine tuning upon operation altitude.
  • 4-pin Molex expansion connector (e.g. for smoke pumps/ fuel transfer pumps/GSU)
  • Optional bleed-air port (e.g. for pressurization of fuel system)
  • Direct quick start on kerosene via integrated high speed / low current ignition system
  • High altitude, high flight speed in-air restart capability
  • Automatic engine cool down cycle after shutting down.
  • Reporting of fuel consumed / fuel flow rate / fuel burned / remaining fuel in tank
  • Engine/ECU power On/Off via voltage control signal
  •  No external power switches required
  • Engine safety shut down input, for instant engine shut down via (flight) termination system. This will kill

power to fuel pump and shut off safety solenoid valves and stop engine in any case on a multiple redundant

way, whilst ECU can stay powered on (for continued data reporting and or engine cool down).

  • Monitoring and reporting of all currents / voltages (e.g. supply voltage / current, pump driving voltage) as

well as all engine life parameters / setpoints.

  • Automatic fuel purge feature for automatic filling/purge of fuel feed lines. As soon as fuel arrives at the

engine, purging will automatically terminate.

  • High performance ceramic bearings

 

Applications:

Propulsion of small radio-controlled model aircraft (ideally suited for models up to 25kg takeoff mass)

 

Notes:

Engine is available in different setups:

  • Different nozzle length available to support easier integration depending on installation situation, currently 3x different nozzle lengths are available. This allows to remove or shorten tail pipes in many cases. Latest types also have 4x90° “radial type” mounting features added.
  • Different styles of fuel inlet ports (Festo fuel fittings or “Swagelock” fittings)
